Cyprus can support technology businesses through EU market access, company law, the IP Box, R&D activity, immigration routes and an English-speaking professional ecosystem. None of these removes the need for qualifying IP, substance, employment compliance, financing documents or product regulation.
The regime provides an 80% deduction on qualifying IP profit calculated under the OECD modified-nexus approach. At the 15% corporate rate from 2026, the effective rate on that qualifying profit can be about 3%. The rate does not apply to gross revenue, acquired marketing IP or non-qualifying profit. Track qualifying expenditure, uplift, acquisition costs, R&D ownership and income by asset.
Use founder and employee invention assignments, contractor agreements, open-source controls, trademark strategy, data licences and development records. Moving existing IP can trigger valuation, transfer-pricing, exit-tax and VAT consequences in the origin country. Incorporating a Cyprus company does not itself transfer code or rights.
The Startup Visa scheme has its own innovation, ownership, capital and residence conditions and the current scheme runs under the official extension to December 2026 with a national cap. It is distinct from the residence permit issued after approval. Company of Foreign Interests employment, the EU Blue Card, general employment and Digital Nomad routes have separate employer, sector, salary and work-right conditions. Do not rely on old 30% staffing or EUR 200,000 investment claims.
Document founder vesting, IP, leaver terms, board and shareholder reserved matters, option plans, convertible instruments and investor rights. Check prospectus, investment-services, crowdfunding, cryptoasset, payments and AML regulation before soliciting funds or holding customer money.
The company must have real management and appropriate people, risk control and records. Founders working from another country can create foreign residence, payroll or permanent-establishment exposure. Related development, licensing and financing must be arm's length.
Primary sources: the consolidated Cyprus Income Tax Law and the Deputy Ministry's current Startup Visa framework.

“Fabulous service from everyone at Philippou Law. We moved here in July and had our immigration sorted with Nikolas and Laura, our tax residency, non-dom and the opening of our business was seamlessly done by Cleo, and we are also buying our house with them, where Maria and Elpida have been wonderful. Honestly I would not go anywhere else. Many thanks all.”
